Stop Waiting for the Perfect Pharmacist – Build Your Own Future Workforce
Jul 07, 2026
For years, pharmacy owners have been hoping that a fully qualified, experienced New Zealand pharmacist will walk through the door ready to solve their staffing challenges. The reality is that those days are becoming increasingly rare.
The pharmacies that are thriving today are the businesses that made a succession plan years ago. They invested in international pharmacists, supported their development, and built a sustainable workforce for the future.
At Pharmacy Recruit, we are proud to have successfully brought 47 international pharmacists to New Zealand. While the Intern Training Program (ITP) has a challenging pass rate, our experience shows that our candidates consistently succeed with the right support, preparation, and time.
Why We Changed Our Intake Timeline
One thing we have learned over the years is that international pharmacists need time to settle into New Zealand and adapt to the professional expectations required to succeed at ITP.
It is not a reflection of their ability or knowledge. Many are highly experienced pharmacists from overseas. However, concepts, communication styles, patient interactions, and New Zealand pharmacy practice take time to master.
For this reason, we have a firm cut-off date to allow candidates more time to establish themselves before commencing the ITP programme.
Important Dates
- 1 September 2026 – Final date that previously accredited sites can offer a contract to one of our current cohort.
- 15 August 2026 – The final contract date for sites who do not have accreditation yet.
- We currently have seven international pharmacists on their way to New Zealand and seven placement opportunities available for the 2027 ITP programme.

Why Choose a Pharmacy Recruit Candidate?
The difference is preparation.
Our candidates are not simply selected and sent to a pharmacy. They undergo a structured preparation programme long before they arrive in New Zealand.
Comprehensive Online Pharmacy Course
Every candidate completes our online pharmacy course, which includes:
- Nine structured learning modules
- New Zealand pharmacy practice fundamentals
- Pharmacy procedures manuals
- Code of Ethics and relevant professional resources
- Extensive reference materials, videos, and links
- Ongoing access to course content for continual learning
Candidates can revisit these resources whenever they need to refresh their knowledge.
High Expectations and Accountability
We maintain a professional candidate community where communication standards matter.
We don't accept poor-quality engagement. We coach candidates to communicate professionally, present themselves appropriately, and respond promptly. Whether it's providing a suitable professional photo, participating in discussions, or attending training sessions, we expect a high standard from day one.
These are the same standards they will encounter when working in New Zealand pharmacies.
Kiwi Communication and Interview Preparation
Some candidates also participate in coaching sessions with New Zealand pharmacists.
This is not primarily about English proficiency. It is about helping candidates become comfortable with New Zealand communication styles, patient interactions, interview expectations, and the Kiwi accent before they arrive.
We explore:
- Patient-facing experiences
- Clinical decision-making
- Pharmacy practice in their home countries
- Professional communication skills
- Interview confidence and presentation
By the time our candidates arrive, they are already familiar with many of the expectations they will encounter in practice.
A Long-Term Workforce Solution
The pharmacy owners who partnered with us four years ago are now seeing the results. They have pharmacists working within their businesses who began their New Zealand journey through our programme.
Meanwhile, many pharmacies are still relying on expensive locums and hoping the workforce shortage will somehow resolve itself.
It won't.
The businesses that plan ahead will be the businesses that remain independent and sustainable.
A Cost-Effective Investment
Our recruitment fee is simple:
$1,800 + GST when the candidate contract is signed
$1,800 + GST when the visa is approved
That's a total recruitment cost of $3,600 + GST.
There will also be immigration and accreditation costs, but even when these are considered, many pharmacy owners find the investment significantly more economical than ongoing locum expenses.
The Question Is Simple
If you've been telling me for years that wages are too high, locums are too expensive, and finding pharmacists is becoming impossible, then it may be time to stop waiting for someone else to solve the problem.
Create your own workforce.
Build your own succession plan.
Invest in pharmacists who are committed to building a future in New Zealand and who have been prepared to succeed.
